Giving Umberto Rispoli a day to remember on Santa Anita’s Memorial Day card, Johannes (Nyquist) rounded out a Grade I-winning exacta for the Italian rider when winning Monday’s GI Shoemaker Mile. Taking his usual position off the early pace, the 4-year-old was content to survey behind an opening half in :45.50. Asked for more approaching the final turn, he was unleashed in the stretch and got up in time to record a 1/2-length victory over Funtastic Again (Funtastic) with 2-1 chance Du Jour (Temple City) taking third. Final time for the mile was 1:33. Rispoli also won the GI Gamely S. with Anisette (GB) earlier in the afternoon. Lifetime Record: 9-5-0-1, $423,859. O-CUTATHY LLC. B-Cuyathy (KY). T-Tim Yakteen.
